It aims to eliminate the need for employees to manually update their work location status in Teams, a process that has often led to confusion and inefficiencies in hybrid and flexible work environments.

How the Feature Works

Acording to the report, When enabled and properly configured by IT administrators, Microsoft Teams will automatically update a user’s work location to reflect the specific building they are working in as soon as their device connects to the company’s Wi-Fi network.

The system relies on mapping between building names and Wi-Fi networks, allowing for precise location identification within the organization’s premises.

Additionally, Teams can leverage connections to specific peripherals, such as monitors, to further refine location accuracy.

This automation is designed to work only during a user’s defined working hours, as set in their Microsoft Outlook calendar.

If a user connects to the Wi-Fi outside these hours, Teams will not update their location, and any set location will be cleared at the end of the working day.

By default, the automatic work location detection feature is turned off. Users must provide explicit consent within the Teams desktop client to enable this functionality, ensuring that privacy concerns are addressed.

Administrators cannot enable this feature on behalf of users, maintaining individual control over location sharing.

The new feature is expected to bring several advantages:
