Microsoft Acknowledges Error Entry in Windows Firewall With Advanced Security

Microsoft has officially confirmed that its recent Windows 11 update, KB5060829, is causing unexpected error entries in the Windows Firewall With Advanced Security logs.

The company has assured users and IT administrators that these errors, while potentially alarming, do not indicate any malfunction or security risk and can be safely ignored.

Following the installation of the June 2025 non-security preview update, many Windows 11 version 24H2 users began noticing a recurring error in the Event Viewer.

The error, logged as Event ID 2042, appears every time the device is restarted and is labeled “Config Read Failed” with the message “More data is available”.

This event is recorded in the Security event log and has triggered concerns among system administrators and users who rely on such logs to monitor system health and detect misconfigurations.

Microsoft clarified that the error is related to a feature currently under development and not yet fully implemented in the operating system.

 “Please note Windows Firewall is expected to function normally, and no action is required to prevent or resolve this error event,” the company stated on its Windows release health dashboard.

 The firewall continues to enforce rules and filter network traffic as intended, with no impact on Windows processes associated with this event.

For those seeking a cleaner event log, Microsoft and community experts suggest filtering out Event ID 2042 entries.

Administrators can create a custom view in Event Viewer to exclude this ID or use PowerShell with the Get-WinEvent -FilterHashtable parameter to suppress these logs.

The company emphasized that this is not the first time such issues have occurred.

In recent months, Microsoft has resolved similar bugs, such as incorrect BitLocker drive encryption warnings and invalid update failure errors, both of which were eventually fixed through subsequent updates.

While the error currently only affects Windows 11 version 24H2 and does not impact server platforms, Microsoft is actively working on a resolution.

The company has not provided an estimated timeline for a fix but has promised an update in a future release.

Users who prefer to eliminate the error immediately can uninstall the June 2025 optional update (KB5060829) via the Settings app and restart their PC, though this step is not necessary for system security or functionality.
