ChatGPT social could be a thing, as leak shows direct messages support

OpenAI doesn’t want ChatGPT to remain just a chatbot for interacting with a large language model.

OpenAI already has Sora 2, which has a social-media-like feed for AI-generated videos, but OpenAI could go beyond just videos.

As spotted on X, ChatGPT is testing support for direct messages. Similar to X, it looks like you will be able to text fellow GPT users.

But how do you reach out to other GPT users? OpenAI is adding “username” support and testing a full-fledged profile support where you can also upload your picture.

AI researcher Tibor also found references to “Direct Messages” on the ChatGPT Android app (version 1.2025.273 beta).

The feature is codenamed “Calpico” / “Calpico Rooms”.

But what’s particularly interesting is that Direct messaging was first introduced in the new Sora 2 iOS app. Previously, we thought social media-like features would be limited to Sora 2, but it appears to be coming to ChatGPT as well.

The code also mentions options to update your profile and profile image, plus other features like notifications when someone joins or leaves the chat, and push notifications when someone (or ChatGPT) sends you a message.
