Microsoft has issued an urgent advisory for Windows users, confirming that a recent set of security updates released after October 14, 2025 may cause certain systems to boot into the BitLocker recovery screen upon restart.
The issue, currently under active investigation, has resulted in user reports of unexpected prompts for BitLocker recovery keys following device updates a scenario affecting some of the most recent client versions of Windows.
The problem surfaced shortly after the rollout of security updates tied to Knowledge Base (KB) articles KB5066835 for Windows 11 versions 25H2 and 24H2, and KB5066791 for Windows 10 version 22H2.
According to Microsoft’s official incident postings (WI1183025, WI1183026, WI1183027), users began reporting that affected systems required entering a BitLocker recovery key at startup a security measure that typically occurs if the system detects a change that could compromise drive encryption or security posture.
In most cases, once the recovery key is correctly entered, the device resumes normal operation and subsequent restarts do not repeat the recovery prompt.
This suggests the issue is transient and closely linked to the installation of the October security patches, rather than a persistent configuration change or tampering event.
BitLocker Recovery Risk
Microsoft’s initial assessment indicates that the issue primarily impacts Intel-powered devices supporting “Connected Standby,” a feature designed to keep systems connected to the network even in a low power state.
While Connected Standby enhances user experience by allowing rapid startup and continuous online status, it can create unique conditions where the operating system’s security protocols such as BitLocker may react to perceived anomalies during the patching process.
At present, no Windows Server versions are believed to be affected, and all confirmed incidents involve recent Windows 11 (25H2, 24H2) and Windows 10 (22H2) client installations.
There are no widespread reports of data loss, but users are reminded of the importance of retaining BitLocker recovery information before applying feature or security updates.
Mitigations
To minimize disruption, Microsoft has made a Known Issue Rollback (KIR) available for affected organizations. IT administrators and individual users experiencing this problem are encouraged to contact Microsoft Support for business to receive guidance on deploying the rollback and restoring update stability.
Microsoft reiterates that it is actively investigating the underlying cause with priority and recommends monitoring the official Windows Release Health dashboard for further updates.
In the meantime, organizations are advised to distribute clear instructions to employees on BitLocker key retrieval procedures to minimize workflow interruptions should recovery prompts occur after forthcoming updates.
As the situation develops, Microsoft pledges to provide additional technical guidance and status updates to help customers navigate any further consequences emerging from the October 2025 security updates.
For now, Windows users especially those on Intel platforms with Connected Standby should be prepared for a one-time BitLocker recovery prompt and proactively safeguard their encryption keys.
