Canadian Airline WestJet Suffers Cyberattack, Halts App and Web Services
Calgary-based WestJet Airlines, Canada’s second-largest carrier, is grappling with the fallout from a significant cybersecurity incident that has disrupted access to its mobile app and internal systems.
The breach, first detected on June 13, has led to intermittent outages and errors for guests attempting to use WestJet’s digital platforms, including the WestJet app and website.
The airline confirmed that specialized internal teams have been activated and are working in close cooperation with law enforcement agencies and Transport Canada to investigate the breach and limit its impact.
In a series of official statements, WestJet emphasized that while digital services have been affected, flight operations remain safe and stable, and there is currently no indication that the incident has compromised the safety of its flights.
“We have activated specialized internal teams in cooperation with law enforcement and Transport Canada to investigate the matter and limit impacts,” WestJet said in a press release.
WestJet has been providing regular updates, promising transparency as the situation evolves. As of June 15, the airline reported ongoing efforts to secure its digital environment and support the teams working to resolve the issue.
The company has apologized for the inconvenience and assured guests and employees that every effort is being made to minimize disruptions.
The nature and extent of the breach remain unclear. WestJet has not disclosed whether any sensitive customer or employee data has been accessed or if a ransom demand has been made.
The company has urged caution among guests and staff, advising them to be vigilant when sharing personal information in the wake of the incident, as cybercriminals often exploit such situations for phishing and other fraudulent activities.
“It is too early to speculate on details, though we are committed to sharing what we know as information becomes available,” the airline stated, adding that updates will be provided every 12 hours or sooner if necessary.
