Bahrain’s airport and Gulf Air fell victim to a cyberattack orchestrated by the newly emerged Al-Toufan cybercriminal group. Engaging in a rampage, the group has targeted various Bahraini government entities in recent days, leading to significant disruption in services at Bahrain Airport and Gulf Air.
The cyber siege led by Al-Toufan is characterized as an act of revenge and resistance, according to claims made by the group.
Cyberattack on Bahrain Airport and Gulf Air
The website of Bahrain Airport was temporarily inaccessible after the Al-Toufan-led cyberattack on its IT systems on Wednesday, November 22.
In a dark web post on the portal of Al-Toufan, they stated, “In stand with our steadfast Palestinian people in Gaza Strip in their brave and honorable resistance, ALTOUFAN TEAM targets companies normalized with the Zionist entity,”
Adding to it, they stated, “Bahrain International Airport and the Bahraini national carrier “Gulf Air” servers and websites, and succeeds in disrupting their services and putting them out of service.”
The current assertion of a cyberattack on Bahrain Airport and Gulf Air lacks substantiation from the Bahrain government at this moment. Preceding this incident, the Al-Toufan team had directed their efforts towards various Bahrain Government-led entities, including the Foreign Ministry of Bahrain and the Information Affairs Ministry of Bahrain websites.
In a statement sent to the Associated Press on Tuesday night, the government acknowledged, “a number of government agency websites have today been the target of malicious cyberattacks.”
“The government of Bahrain has implemented a comprehensive cybersecurity strategy and framework to address such threats,” the statement reads further.
“Government operations were unaffected by the attacks, and work is ongoing to restore access to the targeted websites.”
As the digital dust settles over the targeted cyber siege on Bahrain’s vital infrastructure, the Al-Toufan cybercriminal group leaves a trail of disruption and defiance. The cyberattack on Bahrain Airport and Gulf Air, symbolic gateways to the nation, underscores the escalating cyber warfare tactics employed by the group.
Al-Toufan’s dark web proclamation of revenge and resistance in solidarity with the Palestinian cause adds a layer of geopolitical tension to the digital battleground. The cyberattacks, shrouded in an air of unsubstantiated claims and government reassurances, reveal the vulnerabilities faced by even the most fortified entities.
In the aftermath of the cyberattack on Bahrain Airport and other government-led entities, Bahrain stands at the crossroads of fortifying its cyber defenses and navigating the intricate landscape of digital reprisals, underscoring the imperative for nations to bolster their cybersecurity resilience in an era where conflicts extend beyond physical borders into the intangible realms of cyberspace.
