In a concerning cybersecurity event, Chile finds itself at the center of a growing cyber threat from various ransomware groups. These groups, though not officially, had plans to launch a cyberattack on Chile and the Chilean government has announced the growing risk of these ransomware groups targeting Chile.
Following recent attacks on some of the world’s most advanced telescopes in Hawaii and Chile, the country faces a heightened risk of cyber assault. Notably, the notorious Black Basta ransomware group, among others, has now set its sights on launching a cyberattack on Chile.
Warning about Cyberattack on Chile
The Chilean government issued a stern warning about potential ransomware attacks from a notorious hacker group after the country’s customs department thwarted an incident.
To fortify their cyber defenses against this cyberattack in Chile, the department has taken extensive preventive measures to safeguard their computer systems and networks.
Adhering to the protocols established by the Information Security Incident Response Team (CSIRT) of the Ministerio del Interior y Seguridad Pública, Chile is leaving no stone unturned in its bid to shield critical infrastructure.
The cyber onslaught isn’t confined to Chile alone. Black Basta ransomware group has widened its net, adding two more Italian companies to its roster of victims. Intred and Piemme S.p.A. have found themselves on the receiving end of data leaks, with sensitive identification documents now in the wrong hands.
Cyberattack on Chile: MEDUSA and Cactus Enter the Fray
In addition to the Black Basta ransomware group’s campaign to launch a cyberattack on Chile, the MEDUSA and Cactus ransomware groups have also emerged as formidable adversaries. They’ve joined forces to target Italian organizations, demanding hefty ransoms in exchange for the release of sensitive information.
Earlier this year, the Chilean Army faced a cyber attack orchestrated by the criminal group Rhysida. Swift action and preventive measures were key in mitigating the impact of the incident. By temporarily halting computer operations and isolating the network, security agencies initiated the incident response plan.
Attributed to a new group of malicious actors, the Rhysida ransomware attack against the Chilean Army was notably disruptive. The cyberattack on Chile, acknowledged both by official sources and the Government CSIRT, adds to this cyberattack campaign against Chile.
