Once executed, the attack can steal active session cookies from both customers and support agents, potentially granting attackers unauthorized access to Lenovo’s customer support infrastructure.

The exploit leverages multiple security weaknesses, including improper input sanitization, inadequate output validation, and insufficient content verification by web servers.

Researchers demonstrated how a single crafted prompt could trick the chatbot into generating HTML code containing malicious JavaScript that executes when support agents view the conversation.

The attack unfolds in several stages: the chatbot accepts malicious instructions disguised as legitimate product inquiries, generates HTML responses containing exploit code, stores the malicious content in conversation history, and triggers payload execution when support agents access the chat.

This process can result in session hijacking, data theft, and potential lateral movement within corporate networks.

Beyond cookie theft, the vulnerability could enable more sophisticated attacks, including keylogging, interface manipulation, phishing redirects, and data exfiltration.

Security experts warn that the flaw demonstrates how AI systems without proper guardrails can become attack vectors, emphasizing that large language models inherently lack security instincts and will execute instructions as given.
