LinkedIn Rolls Out New Identity Verification for Free to all Members

The Employee’s social media platform LinkedIn has introduced a method to verify the authenticity of the people on LinkedIn. Linkedin claims that it would be helpful for employees to find new jobs, skills, or opportunities.

In October 2022, Linkedin introduced new features, including the “About this profile” feature, detecting fake accounts with AI-generated photos feature, and stopping suspicious emails.

About this Profile

This feature helps people on LinkedIn to see when a profile was created, updated or whether the profile has a verified phone number.

Linkedin claims that this feature will help users to gather more information on connection requests from a profile and decide whether to accept or decline the request.

Detecting Fake Accounts

LinkedIn introduced this feature to detect fake profiles with profile pictures generated by AI-based software.

Threat actors use AI-based profile pictures to lure users into revealing their personal information.

As per LinkedIn reports, their Deep learning model can detect fake profile pictures generated by AI-based software.

Stopping Suspicious Messages

This feature was introduced that will help users prevent from falling for spam messages.

LinkedIn generates a warning message to the end-user whenever the sender asks the user to go to another platform to continue the conversation.

However, the sender doesn’t know about this warning which prevents the user’s privacy.

Identity Verification with CLEAR

Along with these features, additional ID verification features are available for free to all LinkedIn users. LinkedIn has partnered up with CLEAR to verify users in the U.S. The verification can be done using government ID proof and a US telephone number.

We’re partnering with CLEAR, a secure identity platform, to verify our LinkedIn members in the US. Beginning this month, you can display on your profile that you verified your identity with CLEAR. All you need is a U.S. government-issued ID and U.S. phone number. Here’s what the experience will look like, and if you need a hand getting set up, follow the steps in our Help Center.” LinkedIn says.

Things needed for ID verification with CLEAR.

  1. Availability – The person must be inside the US and have a US government-issued ID.
  2. CLEAR account – People verifying their ID with CLEAR must have an account on the CLEAR platform, created by default as part of LinkedIn verification. (This differs from CLEAR plus membership used for airport security access).
  3. Device – This verification must be done using the LinkedIn application (Desktop, Android or iOS). This feature is not available on web browsers.
  4. Name matching – The issued ID must have the same name as in the LinkedIn profile.

Verification Visibility: Users can turn the verification on their profiles on or off.
