US-based non-profit, Arc of Essex County, has become the latest organisation in the LockBit ransomware gang‘s Victim list.
The Arc of Essex County is a New Jersey-based non-profit dedicated to offering support and resources to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities as their families.
The Lockbit ransomware gang has been continuously targeting organizations and individuals and demanding a ransom in exchange for its stolen data.
The threat posed by Lockbit is compounded by their use of “double extortion” tactics, where they threaten to encrypt the victim’s data and publicly leak it if the ransom is not paid.
This puts the victim in a difficult position, as they may have to choose between paying the ransom or facing the loss of their data and potentially damaging public exposure.
LockBit, The Arc of Essex County, and ransomware
According to a threat actor’s post, the data stolen from the non-profit organization is visible and shown on the leak site. The LockBit gang has also put up a ticking clock on the top of the post, signifying that the confidential information of the organization in question will be exposed to the public if the ransom demand is not met by February 26th.
LockBit is known for using this technique to pressurize its victims and put them in a precarious position – not only do they face the possibility of losing their data, but it could also potentially be leaked for all to see.
