Days after ALPHV/BlackCat ransomware group claimed responsibility for infiltrating the systems of McLaren Health Care Corporation, the company officially acknowledged falling victim to the ransomware attack.
According to the company spokesperson, they are presently conducting an investigation to ascertain the scope of data exposure on the Dark Web following the McLaren ransomware attack.
“Based on our investigation, we have determined that we experienced a ransomware event. We are investigating reports that some of our data may be available on the dark web and will notify individuals whose information was impacted, if any, as soon as possible,” the spokesperson told The Record Media while commenting on the McLaren cyberattack.
McLaren Health Care Corporation, based in Grand Blanc, Michigan, is a fully integrated healthcare delivery system with a total value of $6.6 billion. McLaren owns more than 13 healthcare centers across the Michigan region, along with clinical laboratories and specialty care offices.
The Aftermath of the McLaren Ransomware Attack
Talking about the current situation the spokesperson stated that McLaren has “retained leading global cybersecurity specialists to assist in our investigation, and we have been in touch with law enforcement. We have also taken measures to further strengthen our cybersecurity posture with a focus on securing our systems and limiting disruption to our patients and the communities we serve.”.
They further added that the systems remained operational but did not speak anything about proper functionality of records and billing, the report added.
Background of the McLaren Cyberattack
Previously, the McLaren network witnessed a problem in the electronic health record and billing system. Detroit Free Press reported that McLaren was compelled to turn off the computer networks at fourteen different points due to lack of communication among its workers who resorted to using personal phones.
Previously, the ALPHV ransomware group had targeted an undisclosed healthcare organization located in the U.S. state of Michigan, adding them to their list of victims.
The cybercriminal group, which initially refrained from disclosing the company’s name but later identified it as McLaren.
They asserted to have gained access to a substantial 6TB of the organization’s data. This allegedly includes personal information from millions of individuals, alongside videos depicting the operations within the hospitals.
