Microsoft has launched an innovative cybersecurity challenge that puts artificial intelligence (AI) to the test.
As Microsoft is inviting hackers and security researchers to attempt to break its simulated LLM-integrated email client, dubbed the LLMail service, with rewards of up to $10,000 for successful attacks.
The competition, named “LLMail-Inject: Adaptive Prompt Injection Challenge,” aims to evaluate and improve defenses against prompt injection attacks in AI-powered systems.
Participants are tasked with evading prompt injection defenses in the LLMail service, which utilizes a large language model (LLM) to process user requests and perform actions.
Competitors take on the role of an attacker, attempting to manipulate the LLM into executing unauthorized commands.
Analysts at Microsoft observed that the primary goal is to craft an email that bypasses the system’s defenses and triggers specific actions without the user’s consent.

Technical Analysis
The LLMail service incorporates several key components:-
- An email database containing simulated messages
- A retriever that searches and fetches relevant emails
- An LLM that processes user requests and generates responses
- Multiple prompt injection defenses
Participants must navigate these elements to successfully exploit the system.
To participate, individuals or teams of up to five members can sign up on the official website using their GitHub accounts. Entries can be submitted directly through the website or programmatically via an API.
The challenge assumes that attackers are aware of the existing defenses, requiring them to develop adaptive prompt injection techniques. This approach aims to push the boundaries of AI security and uncover potential vulnerabilities in LLM-based systems.
Microsoft’s initiative highlights the growing importance of AI security in an era where language models are increasingly integrated into various applications. By simulating real-world attack scenarios, the company aims to:
