Researchers Leverage ChatGPT For Enhanced Cryptography Misuse Detection


Researchers from Technische Universität Clausthal in Germany and CUBE Global in Australia have explored the potential of ChatGPT, a large language model developed by OpenAI, to detect cryptographic misuse.

This research highlights how artificial intelligence can be harnessed to enhance software security by identifying vulnerabilities in cryptographic implementations, which are critical for protecting data confidentiality.

The study conducted a comparative analysis using the CryptoAPI-Bench benchmark, which is specifically designed for evaluating Java cryptography misuse detection tools.

The results were promising: ChatGPT demonstrated an average F-measure of 86% across 12 categories of cryptographic misuses.

Notably, it outperformed CryptoGuard, a leading static analysis tool, in several categories. For instance, ChatGPT achieved a 92.43% F-measure in detecting predictable keys compared to CryptoGuard’s 76.92%.

ChatGPT vs Others

One of the key innovations in this research was the use of prompt engineering to improve ChatGPT’s performance.

By refining the prompts used to query ChatGPT, researchers were able to increase its average F-measure to 94.6%.

This improvement allowed ChatGPT to outperform state-of-the-art tools in 10 out of 12 categories and achieve nearly identical results in the remaining two.
