Türk Hack Team Hits Defense Giant

Lockheed Martin Corporation, a prominent American arms, defense, information security, and technology company, recently found itself in the crosshairs of a cyber attack claimed by the Türk Hack Team.

In a new post on their data leak site, Türk Hack Team claimed an alleged Lockheed Martin cyber attack.

To learn more about the alleged Lockheed Martin cyber attack, The Cyber Express reached out to the US Defense giant. However, at the time of writing, no official response had been received from the company.

According to a post by the threat actor, Lockheed Martin was the intended target of their cyber offensive.

As a result, the Lockheedmartin.com website experienced significant disruptions, rendering it temporarily inaccessible, three threat intelligence services told The Cyber Express.

Users were previously greeted with error messages indicating server unresponsiveness. However, at the time of writing, the website seems to be operating normally.

The Türk Hack Team claimed responsibility for the Lockheed Martin cyber attack, highlighting their aim to expose the vulnerability and weakness of large corporations and government entities.

“By targeting large companies and government sites, we will show how weak and vulnerable they are,” read the threat actor post.

However, another thing to be noted in this alleged Lockheed Martin cyber attack is that this is not the first time the organization has faced such a breach in its cybersecurity defenses.

In August 2022, The Cyber Express reported on a similar incident where Russian hackers infiltrated the US defense giant under the collective name Killnet.

The hackers allegedly used a modified hacking technique known as a “Double Whammy.” The motivation behind the attack on Lockheed Martin reportedly related to their involvement in manufacturing the M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS), as a Russian website details.

Lockheed Martin, the renowned manufacturer, has developed the highly advanced High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS). The United States has deployed this state-of-the-art military technology to support Ukraine’s defense against the Russian invading forces.

The HIMARS system has proven to be incredibly effective in countering aggression, significantly impacting the battlefield.

As a result, Lockheed Martin has garnered attention from hacking groups sympathetic to Russia, making it a prime target for its cyber-attacks.

Türk Hack Team and geopolitical attacks

The Cyber Express has reported about geopolitical campaigns involving the Türk Hack Team. The threat actor was in the cybersecurity news recently for the cyber attack on Star Alliance, the the world’s largest global airline alliance.

The Turk Hack Team targeted Dutch-based websites since mid-March, in a cyber campaign called “Netherlands Operation.”

Accompanying their announcement were claims of defacing 252 Dutch websites, supported by alleged screenshots of the compromised sites, reported cybersecurity company ReliaQuest.

Most of the affected websites used Dutch and German top-level domains. Additionally, claims of data dumps for Dutch healthcare and government entities, among others, have been found. The group’s dedicated forum also contained posts related to the Netherlands Operation campaign.

Tensions between the two countries have been escalating since the failed Turkish coup attempt in July 2016. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has sought to expand his executive powers, leading to a constitutional referendum in January 2017.

The referendum has garnered support across Turkey, and Erdogan has attempted to gain favor with Turkish expatriates in Europe.

Recent incidents, such as German officials blocking Turkish ministers from entering several towns and the Netherlands preventing a Turkish minister’s entry into Rotterdam, have fueled the hacktivist response from pro-Iranian threat groups.
