According to news reports, the Twitter source code leak made its way to GitHub several months ago. The social media giant suspects a former employee who could have leaked the source code online.

Reportedly, “FreeSpeechEnthusiast,” a user on the microblogging platform, was responsible for the Twitter breach.

Twitter has turned to the US District Court for the Northern District of California in its defense.

The social media giant is seeking an order that would compel GitHub to reveal the identity of the individual responsible for sharing the code and any other parties who may have downloaded it.

Twitter began an investigation into the leak, and executives handling the matter have surmised that whoever was responsible left the San Francisco-based company last year,” the internal investigation said, reported Cyber Kendra.

In a LinkedIn post, Hudson Rock co-founder and CTO Alon Gal wrote, “Parts of Twitter’s source code are now confirmed to be leaked by Twitter. This along with the 235,000,000 Twitter users database leak I reported on in January practically means you can build your own Twitter

Twitter source code leaked: Why should you be worried?

The exposure of source codes can potentially aid hackers in pinpointing weaknesses that could endanger users.

Some businesses may only disclose partial sections of their source code to enhance application security. However, the recent leak of Twitter’s complete source code could potentially jeopardize the safety of its millions of users.

The extent to which hackers may have taken advantage of the security vulnerabilities uncovered through the code remains unknown, creating an ongoing concern for Twitter’s security team.

Twitter has been attempting to increase its profits through various methods since the acquisition by Elon Musk last year. Unfortunately, releasing sensitive information is a significant setback for the company.

Twitter has undergone significant restructuring, with over half of its global employees being let go. As a result, it currently employs around 3000 individuals, compared to 7,500 in September last year.

This leak can potentially exacerbate problems for the social media titan, which has already come under fire for its approach to user data and misinformation.

While Musk’s decision to open source code used to recommend tweets is a step towards transparency and improving recommendation quality, it also highlights the need for companies to implement robust security measures to protect user data.
