AARNet to operate Basslink communications cable – Telco/ISP
AARNet will take over operation of telecommunications services on the Basslink cable linking Victoria and Tasmania from July.
The internet services provider to Australian universities and researchers has signed an agreement with the current Basslink owner and operator APA Group.
APA will continue to control the electricity connector – the major reason Basslink exists – but will hand control of the fibre communications cable running the same route to AARNet.
The communications cable is an important redundant link connecting Tasmania to the mainland.
APA Group said in a statement that AARNet “will upgrade the network and ensure the ongoing provision of capacity for the research and education sector and the broader telecommunications market in Tasmania.”
“AARNet also has the option to increase network capacity to respond to future potential growth in demand,” the group said.
This, according to APA Group executive strategy and corporate development Beth Griggs, “secures the continued provision of this important service and ensures ongoing investment in its equipment and infrastructure.”
“From July 2025, APA will no longer provide services to customers through Basslink Telecoms,” Griggs said.
“APA will continue to work with the Tasmanian Government, customers, suppliers and other key stakeholders to ensure a smooth transition of the business to AARNet with a focus on maintaining diverse and resilient telecommunications capacity into Tasmania.”
