Ahold Delhaize USA Services, LLC, a major grocery retail operator, has confirmed a significant data breach that compromised the personal information of over 2.2 million shoppers across the United States, including nearly 100,000 residents of Maine.

The breach, which was the result of an external hacking incident, has prompted the company to notify affected customers and offer complimentary identity protection services.

Details of the Breach

According to a notification filed by Ahold Delhaize’s outside counsel, Adam Solomon of Hunton Andrews Kurth LLP, the breach occurred on November 5, 2024, and was discovered the following day.

The company’s headquarters at 2110 Executive Dr., Salisbury, North Carolina, became the epicenter of an investigation that revealed the attackers had accessed sensitive customer data.

The compromised information includes names and other personal identifiers, though the company has not specified whether financial details or Social Security numbers were involved.

The breach affected a total of 2,242,521 shoppers, with 95,463 of those being Maine residents. Due to the scale of the incident in Maine, consumer reporting agencies were also notified following state law.

Ahold Delhaize began sending written notifications to affected customers on June 26, 2025.

The company is offering 24 months of complimentary credit monitoring and identity protection services through Experian, aiming to help customers safeguard their financial information and detect potential misuse.

“We take the privacy and security of our customers’ information very seriously,” the company said in a statement. “We are working closely with law enforcement and cybersecurity experts to investigate the incident and enhance our security measures.”

Customers who receive a notification are urged to enroll in the free Experian credit monitoring service as soon as possible.

Experts also recommend that all potentially affected individuals monitor their financial accounts for unusual activity, review credit reports, and consider placing fraud alerts or credit freezes if necessary.

The breach at Ahold Delhaize adds to a growing list of high-profile data security incidents in the retail sector.

It highlights the ongoing challenges companies face in protecting consumer information from increasingly sophisticated cyber threats.

Regulatory scrutiny is expected to intensify, especially as lawmakers and consumer advocates push for stronger data protection standards.
