“Football season is in full swing, so let’s tackle the issue of sports scams from fake ticket sales to bogus merchandise,” says Alissa Abdullah, PhD, aka Dr Jay, on the latest episode of “Mastering Cyber,” a weekly 1-minute series on the Cybercrime Magazine Podcast.
“Scammers are exploiting fans’ excitement,” says Dr Jay. “Always buy tickets from official sources and double-check the seller’s credentials. Also, be wary of deals that seem too good to be true because they probably are.”
NBC Boston 10 concurs with Dr Jay on official sources for tickets and suggests checking if the seller offers a refund guarantee in the event of a scam. They also warn about fake websites and caution fans to double-check any URL before clicking.
Even after a secure purchase, the fan base is at risk.
“Teams have a lot of customer information — whether it’s biometric or credit card data from people purchasing game tickets — so we’re constantly out there on the darknet looking to see if any of that data has been stolen and is being reposted somewhere on a forum,” Jake Aurand, counterintelligence lead for Binary Defense, a cyberthreat intelligence firm that counts the Cleveland Browns among its customers, told DarkReading.
