Cloudflare CEO Shares Why Anti-Phishing Belongs on a Network Protection Platform
Acquiring Area 1 Security has allowed Cloudflare to extend its network protection capabilities from DDoS attacks to phishing emails, says co-founder and CEO Matthew Prince.

Roughly 95% of the threats seen by Cloudflare start with email, and Area 1’s technology means customers will enjoy a better rate of detection with fewer false positives than legacy secure email gateway offerings, Prince says. In addition to the email security product, Prince says the $162 million deal gives Cloudflare access to threat intelligence services that now appear on the company’s line card (see: Cloudflare One Brings Email Security, DLP, CASB Together).
“I personally started out being very skeptical that there was anything left to be done in the email security space and came away just being amazed that someone had built what is a much better solution than anything else that I had seen on the market,” Prince says. “And so when the opportunity came up for us to acquire Area 1, we thought it made total sense for us to integrate it into our approach.”

Prince, who co-founded Cloudflare in July 2009, has served as CEO and chair of its board of directors since then. Prior to that, he co-founded software and services company Unspam Technologies and has served as its chair since December 2001. Prince is a World Economic Forum Technology Pioneer and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and he serves on the board of advisers for the Center for Information Technology and Privacy Law. He’s also the co-creator of Project Honey Pot, the largest community of webmasters tracking online fraud and abuse.
