Critical Dell VMware vSphere Client Flaw Lets Remote Attackers Execute Commands as Root


Dell has disclosed a significant security vulnerability in its Virtual Storage Integrator (VSI) for VMware vSphere Client. This vulnerability could allow unauthenticated remote attackers to execute arbitrary operating system commands with root privileges.

Tracked as CVE-2026-67261, this flaw affects versions of Dell VSI for VMware vSphere Client before 10.11.1.0. Dell has addressed the issue in its DSA-2026-335 security advisory and strongly urges organizations to upgrade their affected deployments as soon as possible.

Dell VMware vSphere Client Flaw

The vulnerability arises from an OS command injection weakness in VSI’s IAPI component. It falls under CWE-78, which refers to “Improper Neutralization of Special Elements used in an OS Command.”

This type of vulnerability occurs when an application constructs shell commands using externally influenced input without properly validating or escaping potentially harmful characters.

In a successful attack, an adversary could submit specially crafted input that modifies an operating system command executed by the vulnerable component. Since the affected process can execute commands with root permissions, exploitation could grant an attacker complete control over the VSI host.

This vulnerability has the highest risk characteristics: it can be exploited over the network, requires no authentication, has low attack complexity, and does not require user interaction. Its CVSS v3.1 vector is listed as:

This indicates that the impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability could be severe. A compromise could allow attackers to access sensitive configuration data, alter storage management settings, deploy persistence mechanisms, disrupt virtual infrastructure operations, or use the breached system as a gateway to other enterprise systems.

Dell VSI integrates Dell storage capabilities into VMware vSphere environments, enabling administrators to provision, manage, and monitor storage resources from the vSphere Client.

Therefore, a vulnerable VSI deployment may be particularly attractive to attackers targeting virtualization and storage management infrastructure.

Organizations should identify all systems running Dell VSI for VMware vSphere Client and verify whether they are using a version before 10.11.1.0.

Administrators should apply Dell’s security update as soon as operationally feasible, adhering to established change-control procedures and ensuring that appropriate backups and rollback plans are in place.

Security teams should also review network exposure around VSI deployments. Management interfaces should not be broadly accessible from untrusted networks; access should be restricted through segmentation, firewall rules, VPN controls, and administrative jump hosts.

Monitoring tools should be set to flag unusual command executions, unexpected processes, outbound connections, or privilege escalation activities on VSI systems.

Due to the absence of known affected package metadata or detailed proof-of-concept in public advisory data, defenders should not assume exploitation is unlikely. The flaw’s unauthenticated and network-accessible nature emphasizes the need for prompt patching and reduction of exposure.
