India has strengthened its cyber infrastructure significantly in recent years. Helplines like 1930, cybercrime reporting portals, specialized cyber cells and awareness campaigns have become more accessible. Financial institutions and digital platforms are also investing heavily in fraud detection and cybersecurity systems.
However, one critical question remains:

The clear answer is – no.
Where in few cases, victims recover only a fraction of the lost amount, but in most of the cases it never been recovered at all. Cybercriminals rapidly transfer funds through multiple accounts and massively convert them into cryptocurrency that goes out of the country within a few minutes and become untraceable, making recovery extremely difficult and time-sensitive. By the time victims realize the fraud and contact authorities, the damage is often already done.
This highlights a major gap in India’s cybersecurity ecosystem:

Millions of first-time internet users are entering digital ecosystems without adequate security awareness. Though it is not limited to them only, in many cases software engineers and other corporate workers got scammed by the fraudstars.
Cybercrime does not discriminate based on age, education, profession, or financial status. Fraudsters exploit emotions like fear, urgency, greed, trust and authority that affect everyone and easily been trapped.
The government, financial institutions, telecom providers, cybersecurity companies and educational institutions must work together to build a nationwide culture of digital vigilance.
First Line of Defence Are the Citizen
Cyber resilience is often discussed in terms of cybersecurity frameworks, AI-driven systems and data protection laws. While these remain essential, the true frontline of cyber defence is still the citizen.
An Aware Citizen Can:
- Stop a scam before money is transferred.
- Refuse to share sensitive information.
- Identify manipulated investment traps.
- Protect family savings and digital identities.
This is where grassroots awareness becomes more powerful than reactive systems alone.
