DNV has been selected to provide cybersecurity services for the Santiago de los Caballeros monorail project in the Dominican Republic, further expanding its presence in the rail cybersecurity sector. The engagement covers cybersecurity assurance for safety-critical railway systems, including signalling, train control, rolling stock, and power supply, as well as supporting electromechanical and digital infrastructure. The project highlights the growing need to secure increasingly interconnected rail environments where operational technology, safety systems, and digital platforms converge.
Under terms of the exclusive contract, DNV’s rail assurance, advisory and digital services team, in collaboration with engineering company EQP, will support the government-owned Trust for the Development of the Mass Transit System of the Dominican Republic (FITRAM) with proactive cyber risk management services for the monorail, the first of its kind in the Caribbean.
Recently integrated into DNV’s new Industrial Services business unit, the rail team supports customers to safely manage critical assets and address transformations in the railway sector, strengthening systems against evolving digital threats. Designed to ease travel congestion for Santiago de los Caballeros’ population and reduce urban commute costs by 30%, the under-construction monorail will cover a length of more than 13km with 14 overground stations located across the city.
DNV’s cybersecurity services will ensure the monorail system aligns with national and international cyber regulations and industry best practices. DNV’s activities are aligned with leading international railway and industrial cybersecurity standards, including TS 50701, IEC 62443 and the emerging IEC 63452 framework.
“The Santiago de los Caballeros monorail is a groundbreaking project that will reduce congestion in the city and bring down travel costs for commuters. It is an honor for DNV to have been chosen to provide specialized cybersecurity services for the system,” Jorge Aldegunde, Global Head of Railway Services at DNV, said in a Wednesday media statement.
“DNV’s cybersecurity expertise will contribute to a safer, more secure and resilient monorail system for Santiago de los Caballeros and we look forward to continued collaboration with the project stakeholders as we contribute to this milestone project for the region.”
DNV will provide independent, end-to-end cybersecurity advisory and assurance services across the project lifecycle for the Santiago de los Caballeros monorail, ensuring that systems are designed, assessed and validated with security embedded across design, construction, integration and testing phases. This includes verification of critical rail subsystems, components and key electromechanical and digital systems such as ticketing, Physical Security Information Management (PSIM), CCTV and more, reflecting the increasingly interconnected nature of modern rail operations.
“The Santiago de los Caballeros monorail is a complex, safety‑critical system that integrates signaling, rolling stock, power and digital platforms,” José M. Díaz, general director at EQP, said. “Working with DNV allows us to embed a structured cybersecurity approach across all railway and electromechanical systems, supporting a resilient and secure delivery for FITRAM and the city. This collaboration strengthens our system integration activities with independent expertise aligned to international railway standards.”
“The Santiago de los Caballeros monorail represents a major step forward in sustainable urban mobility for the Dominican Republic,” Jhael Isa, executive director at FITRAM, said. “Cybersecurity is a fundamental enabler of safe, reliable and trusted railway operations. By working with EQP and DNV, we are ensuring that international best practices are applied across all phases of the project, supporting long-term resilience and public confidence in this landmark infrastructure.”
“Assurance, advisory and digital services within the rail industry is an important facet of DNV’s diverse portfolio and we are proud to support the development of the Santiago de los Caballeros monorail,” Mohamed Houari, CEO of Industrial Services at DNV, said.
“Bringing our rail activities under the DNV Industrial Services banner marks an important step in strengthening and expanding our global service offering. Our strong track record enables us to deliver greater value to our customers through an integrated, end-to-end approach. Our rail team combines deep technical expertise with a forward-looking approach to digital transformation, helping to enhance performance, efficiency and resilience across entire asset lifecycles.”
