Google Bard AI Causes $100 Billion Loss With Wrong Answers

As time goes on, the usage of Artificial Intelligence (AI) chatbots is becoming increasingly prevalent. This technology is becoming a ubiquitous part of our daily lives, as more and more companies are recognizing the benefits that AI chatbots can provide.

An advertisement for Google Bard, Google’s cutting-edge conversational AI technology, has inadvertently highlighted a flaw in the system. The advertisement showed the AI tool giving a response to a query that was not factually correct.

AI chatbots can handle a wide range of tasks, from answering simple questions to assisting customers with more complex issues. They can also be integrated into various platforms and channels, including websites, messaging apps, and virtual assistants.

However, it’s important to note that AI chatbots are not a one-size-fits-all solution, and their effectiveness depends on their design, training, and specific use case.

Some AI chatbots may not be able to handle complex or nuanced questions, and there can be instances of misunderstandings or errors in the responses they provide.

Google has made a major announcement regarding their latest AI technology, Bard. The tech giant has stated that it will be integrating Bard into its search engine after a successful testing phase.

This move is significant as it will change the way users receive information from the search engine. Instead of being presented with a list of relevant websites, users will now receive a bespoke written response to their query.

$100 Billion Loss With Wrong Answers

The AI chatbot Bard provided two correct answers that accurately grasped the question. However, Bard made a substantial mistake by stating that the James Webb Space Telescope was the pioneer in capturing images of exoplanets when, in fact, the Very Large Telescope of the European Southern Observatory was the first to achieve this feat back in 2004.

The spotlight was on Google as the world eagerly awaited their demonstration of the AI chatbot Bard. However, when Bard made a crucial mistake, the consequences were significant.

Alphabet Inc., Google’s parent company, experienced a loss of $100 billion in market value. This caused a drop in Alphabet shares during regular trading, declining by as much as 9%.

Despite the setback, the shares stabilized somewhat after hours. The question that remained was what was the root cause of this substantial loss in value.

The tech company, known for its innovation, shared a brief video of Bard’s capabilities through Twitter. They portrayed the AI chatbot as a tool encouraging exploration by simplifying intricate subjects.

Unfortunately, just hours before the official launch of Bard in Paris, it was revealed that the chatbot had provided an incorrect answer.

Despite the tech giant’s efforts to promote Bard as a “launchpad for curiosity,” the error raised some concerns about its reliability.

When posed with the question about the discoveries made by the James Webb Space Telescope, aimed at a 9-year-old’s understanding, its competitor provided a more accurate and imaginative response.

The AI emphasized the telescope’s capability of searching for and examining exoplanets, observing the formation of stars and galaxies, investigating dark matter and dark energy, and seeking evidence of life.

While it is anticipated that Google will enhance Bard in the future to offer clearer and more precise answers, it is yet to be determined if the company will shift its focus solely to AI-based responses and divert attention from its search business.
