Google announced Monday it’s integrating its Gemini AI model into Gmail, introducing features that transform the email service into a proactive personal assistant for its 3 billion users.
The company is launching AI Overviews, a feature that synthesizes long email threads into concise summaries of key points.
Users can also ask their inbox natural-language questions, such as “Who was the plumber that gave me a quote last year?” and receive instant answers without searching through messages.
AI-Powered Email Management Revolution
AI Overview conversation summaries are available to all users immediately, free of charge. At the same time, the question-asking capability requires a Google AI Pro or Ultra subscription.
Help Me Write and Suggested Replies are also rolling out to everyone at no cost. Help Me Write assists users in polishing or drafting emails.
Suggested Replies, an enhanced version of Smart Replies, uses conversation context to offer one-click responses that match the user’s writing style.
For example, when coordinating a family gathering and an aunt asks about bringing cake instead of pie, the system can draft an appropriate response in the user’s tone.
Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers gain access to a Proofread feature for advanced grammar, tone, and style checks. Next month, Help Me Write will incorporate context from other Google apps for better personalization.
The AI Inbox feature acts as a personalized briefing, filtering clutter and highlighting essential to-dos.
It identifies VIP contacts based on email frequency and contact lists, then prioritizes critical items like bills due tomorrow or dentist appointments.
Google emphasizes that this analysis is conducted securely, with privacy protections, and that user data remains under its control. AI Inbox is currently available to trusted testers before broader release.
These capabilities are powered by Gemini 3 and begin rolling out today in the United States for English-speaking users, with more languages and regions planned.
While basic features are free, advanced capabilities require Google AI Pro or Ultra subscriptions.
