Did you always think you would work in the technology industry?
After finishing my undergraduate degree at UC Berkeley, I began working at the San Francisco SPCA, thinking one day I would become a veterinarian. I transitioned into an emergency room nurse, but a broken foot led me to take on a program management role. While in this position, I realized that those making the most significant impact on animal welfare were the ones with business degrees. This prompted me to move into a business role and eventually leave the SPCA.
How has your non-tech background contributed to your current role at HackerOne?
While I worked in the nonprofit sector, I also worked in the music industry. Eventually, I switched to working full-time in live music touring. As a logistics and operations expert, I helped artists execute their plans and meet their strategic goals. However, after 10 years, it was time for me to stretch my wings again.
I enjoyed utilizing my skills to help others achieve their dreams. This eventually led me to explore other roles in the tech industry that would allow me to apply these skills. As I pursued my MBA, I searched for a new tech role that positively impacted society. HackerOne’s mission of making the internet a safer place resonated with me, and I was drawn to the idea of working with a global community of hackers. I also appreciated that HackerOne aims to make the tech industry more accessible.
So, I applied to work at HackerOne and was lucky enough to get the job. As a CSM, I aim to ensure that our customers have the best possible experience with HackerOne. I enjoy working with them to meet their goals and identify ways to improve their efficiency.
I always describe my career journey as having chapters or different acts in a play because they’re all part of my story, but they are pretty distinct. However, a common thread pulled them all together: I help others achieve their wildest dreams and goals.
What challenges did you face to break into tech, and how did you overcome them?
During my transition to the tech industry, I encountered several challenges, one of which was the exclusive nature of the industry. It can be extremely difficult to make inroads if you don’t have prior experience or a connection in the industry.
However, I was able to overcome this obstacle by leveraging the career services offered by my graduate program and networking with industry professionals. This helped me meet the right people at the right time and eventually break into the industry.
I met HackerOne CEO Marten Mickos by chance before joining the company. We met at an event at UC Berkeley, where my professor had invited him. Despite feeling nervous, I was confident in my skills and previous successes. I’m grateful to HackerOne for seeing my potential and helping me change my career.
What advice would you give someone wanting to transition into the tech industry?
Your journey is important, so embrace your unique qualities, keep learning, and adapt to succeed in this ever-changing field, no matter your background. You will be surprised at what your past skills can translate into.
