Hive Five 227 – Developers, Developers, Developers.

Hive Five 227 - Developers, Developers, Developers.

I made two new musical discoveries this week: Acid Bath and Ryo Fukui, exploring swamp metal and jazz.

I also attempted to fix our broken lawn mower. Long story short, it’s running again, but it doesn’t sound or act quite right.

Although I learned a bunch, I ultimately ended up buying a new one.

Overall, we’ve been enjoying summer this week with grilling, children’s laughter, and water activities.

Let’s take this week by swarm!

  • Applying for a security job at Canonical was weird, with odd questions and tests. Despite good feedback, rejection came after a bizarre chat with the CEO. MORE

  • Improve your coding interviews by avoiding the word “why.” Asking candidates to explain their process gets better signal than a word that often feels like a challenge. MORE

“[…] While “why” questions may be commonly used to express curiosity, many, many folks have been culturally conditioned (from very early on!) to interpret them as rhetorical challenges:

  • “Why didn’t you do your homework?”

  • “Why are you getting home so late?”

  • “Why won’t you eat your vegetables”

  • “Why in the world would you do it that way?”

  • “and so on. […]”

  • Overthinking is just another fancy form of procrastination that keeps you stuck in endless planning instead of shipping real work. The cure isn’t more thinking but decisive action—set time limits on decisions, embrace imperfection, and focus on small consistent steps that build momentum toward your goals. MORE

  • Jordan Amblin, Product Designer at Raycast, walks through his iOS setup and productivity workflow. He shares his approach to organizing apps, using widgets, and leveraging various tools to maintain focus and efficiency. MORE

“[…] I’m in little doubt that, as long as there is big money to be made, the exploitative, VC-appeasing hype-cycle will rumble ever onwards. However, much in the same way that artisan-tailors and farm-to-table dining continue to work separately from the exploitative worlds of fast-fashion and fast-food, I have to believe that there can be another place—another market—for those of us who still care about the people and the craft. • If you are useful, it doesn’t mean you are valued. As you progress in your career, understanding the difference between being useful and being valued is very important.
