Human Risk Is Today’s Biggest Cybersecurity Gap

Cybercrime is expected to grow from $8 trillion globally in 2023 to $10.5 trillion by 2025, according to Cybersecurity Ventures.

A 2024 report from Mimecast warns that human risk is today’s biggest cybersecurity gap, and it remains largely unaddressed. 75 percent of respondents say their company is at risk of inadvertent data leaks by careless or negligent employees, yet only 15 percent of companies provide cyber awareness training to their employees on an ongoing basis.

Professional educators have long held that to be effective, security awareness training must be consistent, delivered regularly in small doses and tailored to fit individual employees. The Mimecast report respondents are not there yet. But their keen awareness of human risk and how it translates into cyber risk suggests that, going forward, they will increasingly push for their organizations to embrace adaptive training methods.

The Mimecast report is based on an in-depth global survey of 1,100 information technology and cybersecurity professionals.
