Thousands of users across Japan and China experienced significant disruptions to Microsoft 365 services on Thursday morning due to a critical routing issue affecting the company’s infrastructure.

The outage affected essential workplace tools, including Teams, Outlook, OneDrive, and Copilot, resulting in widespread operational challenges for enterprises in the Asia-Pacific region.

Service Disruption Details

The incident began around 12:00 AM UTC (8:00 AM JST), with users reporting intermittent login failures, application loading errors, and degraded performance across multiple Microsoft 365 platforms.

The routing misconfiguration isolated healthy infrastructure components, preventing normal traffic distribution through the region’s data centers.

Microsoft’s engineering teams responded quickly to mitigate the impact. By 7:40 AM GMT+5:30, engineers successfully rebalanced traffic across redundant systems to restore service availability.

The company ruled out cyberattacks in its initial statements, confirming the incident as an infrastructure issue rather than a security breach.

Throughout the incident, Microsoft confirmed that no data loss or security breaches occurred. However, the downtime significantly disrupted business operations and remote work productivity for affected organizations, particularly those relying heavily on cloud-based collaboration tools.

This outage reflects ongoing challenges with global cloud infrastructure reliability. Routing issues, typically caused by Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) misconfigurations or peering problems, can have widespread cascading effects.

Microsoft experienced similar infrastructure challenges previously, including a broader Azure outage in July that affected multiple 365 services.

As recovery efforts progressed, partial recovery signals indicated positive momentum toward full service normalization. Microsoft advised users to continuously monitor the admin center status page for real-time updates.
