Microsoft fixes bug behind incorrect Windows Firewall errors

Microsoft has resolved a known issue that triggers invalid Windows Firewall errors after rebooting Windows 11 24H2 systems with the June 2025 preview update installed.

The bug has been fixed in the KB5062660 preview cumulative update for Windows 11 24H2, released on Tuesday, with the fix to be made generally available to all users who will install the August Patch Tuesday updates.

Redmond first acknowledged this bug on July 3rd, when Redmond asked admins to ignore incorrect warnings logged in the Event Viewer for Windows Firewall with Advanced Security.

It also noted at the time that this bug is caused by a new feature still under development, which hasn’t yet been fully integrated with the operating system.

“The error is found in Event Viewer as event 2042 for Windows Firewall With Advanced Security. The event appears as ‘Config Read Failed’ with message ‘More data is available’,” it explained.

“Although this event is logged in Event Viewer every time the device is restarted, they do not reflect an issue with Windows Firewall, and can be disregarded.”

On July 8th, the company apologized after mistakenly tagging the known issue as resolved and said that a fix would soon be available.

In recent weeks, Redmond has dealt with similar issues affecting other Windows features, which have resulted in more erroneous warnings with no actual impact.

For instance, in April, Microsoft confirmed and fixed another known issue that was causing invalid 0x80070643 failure errors after installing the April 2025 Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) updates.

The same month, it resolved a bug that caused incorrect BitLocker drive encryption errors on Windows 10 and Windows 11 devices due to a reporting issue. Redmond confirmed the bug in October and said that it only impacted managed Windows environments where drive encryption was enforced for the operating system and fixed drives.
