Microsoft has released an emergency out-of-band security update to address a critical issue affecting Windows reset and recovery operations across multiple versions of the operating system.
The patch, released on August 19, 2025, resolves problems that emerged after users installed the August 2025 Windows security update, causing some reset and recovery attempts to fail on client versions of Windows.

Windows 10 version 22H2 users will install KB5066188, bringing OS builds to 19044.6218 and 19045.6218.
Enterprise and IoT environments also receive targeted fixes. Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021 and Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021 systems use the same KB5066188 update as standard Windows 10 22H2 installations.
However, older enterprise deployments running Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2019 and Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2019 receive a separate KB5066187 update, updating OS build to 17763.7683.
Microsoft recommends that users who haven’t yet installed the problematic August 2025 security update should apply this out-of-band patch instead, effectively bypassing the problematic update entirely.
For organizations and individuals whose systems aren’t experiencing reset and recovery failures, Microsoft indicates the update installation is optional.
