Microsoft has addressed a widespread audio issue affecting Bluetooth speakers, headsets, and integrated laptop speakers in Windows 11 version 24H2.
The problem stemmed from an incompatibility with Dirac Audio software on certain devices, causing audio devices to go silent and applications to stop recognizing them.
Resolves Bluetooth Audio Problem
Following reports from users and IT administrators, Microsoft applied a compatibility hold and has now released a driver update to restore full audio support.
After installing the Windows 11 24H2 update, some users noticed that their Bluetooth headsets, speakers, and built-in laptop speakers no longer worked.
Both first-party and third-party apps failed to detect any audio devices. The root cause was identified as the cridspapo.dll component from Dirac Audio, a third-party sound enhancement technology.
When Windows 11 tried to load this DLL, it conflicted with the new operating system version and disabled audio output entirely.
Microsoft first logged the issue on December 18, 2024, when reports began to surface. To prevent more users from encountering the issue, the company applied a compatibility safeguard hold on affected devices.
This hold blocked Windows Update from offering the 24H2 upgrade on machines with the Dirac Audio component. Administrators using Windows Update for Business could track this using safeguard ID 54283088.
On September 12, 2025, at 13:01 PT, Microsoft announced that the audio problem was resolved. The company released a new version of the Dirac Audio driver through Windows Update.
This driver replaces the faulty cridspapo.dll and restores normal audio functionality on affected machines.
Microsoft recommends that all users install the latest security update, which includes the fix for this Bluetooth audio issue along with other important improvements and patches.
How to Get the Fix
If you use Windows 11 Home or Pro, you can verify whether any safeguard holds apply to your device:
- Open Start and go to Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
If a hold is in place, you will see the message:
“Upgrade to Windows 11 is on its way to your device. There is nothing that requires your attention at the moment. Once the update is ready for your device, you’ll see it available on this page.”
Next to this message, select Learn more to view a list of device-specific safeguards. For in-depth details, refer to KB5006965 on Microsoft’s support site.
The compatibility hold was lifted on September 11, 2025. Eligible devices without any other safeguards will now receive the 24H2 update automatically through Windows Update.
Microsoft notes that it may take up to 48 hours for the update to appear. Users who want to speed up the process can restart their devices, which sometimes triggers the update check more quickly.
