Microsoft rolls out BIOS update that fixes ASUS blue screen issues

More ASUS customers can now install Windows 11 24H2 after applying a BIOS update that resolves blue screen of death (BSOD) issues acknowledged in October.

As Microsoft revealed last year when it added a compatibility hold blocking the Windows 11 2024 Update on affected systems, these problems occur when trying to update to Windows 11 24H2 on some ASUS devices with very specific hardware components.

Redmond said at the time that the known issue mainly impacts ASUS X415KA and X515KA laptop models. “During the update process, devices might experience a blue screen with an error message and cannot complete the installation of version 24H2,” it stated.

However, in a recent update to the Windows release health dashboard, Microsoft says it’s now rolling out a BIOS update provided by ASUS that addresses the BSOD problems, making the latest Windows 11 version available on more ASUS devices.

“Devices with ASUS models X415KA and X515KA running a BIOS version lower than 311 will need to install the latest BIOS update to remove the safeguard and proceed with the Windows 11, version 24H2 upgrade,” Microsoft said.

“The BIOS update is categorized as a Critical Update (CU) and is available through Windows Update. While the safeguard remains in place, it will gradually be lifted as more devices receive the update.”

ASUS users who want their PCs ready for a Windows 11 24H2 upgrade are advised to first install the BIOS update, available via Settings > Windows Update.

Last month, Microsoft also lifted a safeguard hold that prevented devices with Auto HDR enabled from installing the Windows 11 2024 Update due to gaming issues such as game freezes and graphics that look high-contrast and oversaturated. It also removed compatibility holds for Windows 11 PCs with Assassin’s Creed compatibility issues that caused crashes, freezes, and audio problems.

However, you won’t be able to upgrade if Windows 11 24H2 is blocked on your PC by one of the remaining safeguard holds prompted by incompatible configurations or software.

These include devices with Asphalt 8 (Airborne), Dirac audio improvement software, integrated cameras, or running the Safe Exam Browser and Easy Anti-Cheat applications.
