Global annual ransomware damages are projected to exceed $265 billion by 2031, according to Cybersecurity Ventures, highlighting the urgent need for businesses to rethink how they defend against these attacks.

The reality is simple: reacting to ransomware isn’t enough, according to a blog post by Brad LaPorte, chief marketing officer at Morphisec. By the time an attack is detected, the damage is already done—data is encrypted, operations are disrupted, and businesses face hefty ransom demands. The only effective way to combat ransomware is to prevent it from succeeding in the first place.

LaPorte points to Industry research that estimates 60 percent of ransomware attacks bypass traditional detection tools, leaving businesses vulnerable. However, if a forward looking strategy is adopted by enough organizations, then that number may come way down.

Prevention-first security focuses on stopping ransomware and other advanced threats before they can execute. Instead of relying on detection, prevention-first solutions proactively eliminate vulnerabilities, block malicious actions, and prevent attacks from succeeding.

This approach aligns with the Gartner-defined Preemptive Cyber Defense category, which is projected to dominate the cybersecurity landscape by 2030.
