OmniTrust launches GridAuth to strengthen device identity and trust management across connected energy grids

OmniTrust announced the launch of GridAuth, a device identity and trust management platform for energy utilities and equipment manufacturers deploying secure Wi-SUN Field Area Networks (FAN), Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI), and connected-grid infrastructure.

The announcement coincides with the Wi-SUN Alliance Fall Members Meeting in North Carolina.

Energy utilities are managing increasingly complex networks of smart meters, routers, gateways, and other connected devices, often supplied by multiple manufacturers and expected to remain deployed for decades. As these networks expand, so do the cybersecurity risks and regulatory demands surrounding critical infrastructure protection and supply chain security. Establishing trusted device identities at manufacturing is only the beginning. Maintaining secure communications and operational control throughout each device’s lifecycle is essential to protecting critical infrastructure.

GridAuth bridges the gap between device identity established during manufacturing and the long-term trust requirements of utility operators. The platform helps manufacturers securely provision devices while enabling utilities to maintain visibility and control across complex, multi-vendor networks.

Key capabilities of GridAuth include establishing and tracking trusted device identities from manufacturing through deployment, and simplifying certificate provisioning and enrollment for Wi-SUN and connected infrastructure devices. The platform also supports consistent identity practices across equipment manufacturers, enables utility-defined trust policies and operational credentials, and maintains visibility into device certificates and provisioning history.

“Utilities are responsible for protecting infrastructure that may operate for decades, while manufacturers, technologies, and cybersecurity requirements change,” said Daniel Fynaardt, vice president of software development at OmniTrust. “GridAuth is designed to give utilities greater visibility and control over device trust while simplifying secure provisioning for manufacturers. Our goal is to make trusted device identity easier to manage across the connected grid.”

GridAuth is powered by OmniTrust PKI (OTPKI), which supports certificate issuance, enrollment, validation, revocation, CA hierarchy management, and cryptographic key operations. Together, they provide the trust infrastructure needed for secure manufacturing, device onboarding, and long-term lifecycle management.
