OpenClaw founder Peter Steinberger says he is joining OpenAI to help “bring agents to everyone,” positioning the move as a way to accelerate development while putting stronger safety work around consumer-grade AI automation.
In a Feb. 14, 2026, blog post, Steinberger described the past month as a “whirlwind” after OpenClaw, a project he framed as a “playground” effort, drew major attention and outside pressure to commercialise.
His decision: keep OpenClaw open and independent, but do his day-to-day work inside OpenAI to access frontier research and models.
Agentic systems are not just chatbots; they can act across apps, files, and services. That makes them a new control plane for identity, data, and workflow automation, and therefore a high-value target.
Common agent risks include prompt injection (malicious instructions hidden in content an agent reads), tool abuse (agents tricked into running actions they shouldn’t), secret leakage (API keys and tokens exposed via logs or model outputs), and data exfiltration (sensitive files copied to external destinations).
Steinberger’s stated goal, an agent “even my mum can use”, raises the stakes: mainstream usability often means broader permissions, which must be balanced with strict guardrails.
OpenAI’s emphasis on safety research and access to the “latest models and research” could help address these issues through better model behavior, stronger tool-permissioning patterns, and safer default architectures.
For enterprise defenders, the bigger story is that agents are quickly becoming a standard interface to SaaS and local data, so organizations should expect more security products and policies to evolve around agent permissions, audit logs, and isolation boundaries.
Steinberger also said OpenClaw will move into a foundation structure and “stay open and independent,” with a focus on giving users a way to “own their data” while supporting more models and companies.
From a cybersecurity perspective, a foundation model can improve governance, transparency, and long-term maintenance, if it includes clear processes for vulnerability reporting, code signing, dependency hygiene, and secure release practices.
It can also help reduce single-maintainer risk, a common supply-chain concern in fast-growing open-source projects.
Steinberger noted OpenAI already sponsors the project and has committed to enabling him to dedicate time to it, while he joins OpenAI’s AI research and development efforts.
