Opportunity Meets Adventure in Hong Kong
Initiatives like the Top Talent Pass Scheme (TTPS) by the Hong Kong Government is making it easier for international talent to move to Asia, with several top Australian universities eligible for the program. This scheme provides a streamlined pathway to Hong Kong’s dynamic job market, which boasts abundant career prospects, low tax rates, and a diverse cultural scene—from bustling markets to serene hiking trails.
Hong Kong is emerging as a regional powerhouse in Innovation & Technology, supported by initiatives like the InnoHK research clusters, while Financial Services remains a cornerstone of its economy. The focus on Sustainability has created opportunities in green finance and ESG research.
What sets Hong Kong apart is its unique blend of East-meets-West culture, providing a multicultural environment that offers both familiarity and excitement. For many, it’s not just a job move—it’s a chance to grow and connect in one of the world’s most dynamic cities. Two Australians who have made this move share their stories.
Feeling at home in a not so foreign land – Jordan’s Story
Jordan moved to Hong Kong in early 2024 and now works as a Senior Manager at a commercial real estate agency. He was drawn by the city’s reputation as a global super-connector and its perfect mix of career advancement and personal growth, with opportunities to work on regional projects across North Asia and APAC.
“I considered Singapore and Japan, but Hong Kong stood out because of its solid finance and commerce foundations,” he says. The city’s common law system, aligned with Australia’s, made the transition smoother, while its proximity to travel destinations across Greater China and North Asia added to the appeal.
Outside of work, Jordan has embraced local food adventures, regularly enjoying the sweet and sour pork and Chinese fried noodles at the Sheung Wan wet market. He notes: “While the working environments and infrastructure are very similar, Hong Kong’s lower taxes and international community are its key advantages.” He even found an unexpected home away from home in an Australian-rules football team. For Jordan, Hong Kong is a chance to thrive in a connected city.
Jordan’s move was made easier by the flexibility of the TTPS visa, which doesn’t require a pre-arranged job.
Just the right amount of culture shock – Jonas’s Story
Since relocating from Sydney to Hong Kong in May 2024 under the Employment Visa for Non-Local Graduates, Jonas has merged professional ambition with cultural curiosity as a Senior Consultant at a global accounting firm.
After teaching in Beijing, he found Hong Kong’s East-meets-West blend a familiar transition. The city’s reputation as an international business center matched his academic background. “After the pandemic, I wanted a new challenge—one that would push me professionally while allowing me to explore Asia,” he explains.
Outside of work, Jonas is captivated by Hong Kong’s historical heritage and vibrant cultural scene. The shift from Sydney’s relaxed lifestyle to Hong Kong’s intensity was striking. “In Australia, time feels abundant, but here, every weekend presents a dilemma—hiking, events, or quick getaways,” he notes. The city’s efficient public transport contrasts sharply with Sydney’s slower pace.
Joining a local rugby team helped Jonas make friends, and learning Cantonese enhanced his experience. Nearly a year later, Hong Kong feels like home. For young Aussies considering the move, he advises, “Do it! It’s a great experience, though expect some nervousness and homesickness.”
