We believe in fostering an environment where everyone feels valued and empowered to be their authentic selves, both in and out of the workplace. Today, we are showcasing three HackerOne employees who identify as LGBTQIA+ and share their unique journeys of navigating the workplace.
Kirsten Conatser, Senior Support and Operations Specialist, based in California, U.S., reflects on her journey of self-acceptance and the challenges she faced in the workplace due to societal norms. Despite past experiences of being sexualized and judged, she finds solace at HackerOne, where she can freely share her personal life without fear of judgment or discrimination.
“At work, I was one person, and I could be me at home. HackerOne has been a place where I feel comfortable talking about who is in my life outside of work regardless of gender/background/color, and I no longer have to watch my words or close myself off to others.”
Zander, Senior Manager, IT and Workplaces, from California, U.S., shares his realization of being bisexual and the struggle for visibility within the LGBTQIA+ community. With a family history deeply rooted in activism, he proudly raises his flag, determined to be seen and heard in a world where bisexuality often remains invisible.
“To me, it’s no longer good enough to just be seen as an ally when the LGBTQIA+ movement
is my movement, a movement my mother fought for 50 years and my cousin died for.”
Tilly McAdden, VP, Associate General Counsel, based in London, U.K., recounts her experiences navigating the workplace as a lesbian, from concealing her identity to facing derogatory remarks and even physical intimidation. Despite facing discrimination and harassment, she emphasizes the importance of being vocal about societal change and human rights while remaining cautious about where she works and travels to ensure her safety.
“These experiences mean that I am still extremely careful about where I work, where I live, the places I take holidays.
I still will only hold my girlfriend’s hand when there is no one around and still sometimes fear for my physical safety in many places.”
