The troubling trend of deepfake creations shows no signs of abating, as it continues to target prominent public figures. After the recent emergence of Rashmika Mandanna deepfake video in an elevator and manipulated images of Katrina Kaif from her upcoming movie Tiger 3, the disturbing trend persists, with Sara Tendulkar deepfake image alongside rumored boyfriend Shubman Gill circulating on the internet.
The Sara Tendulkar Deepfake Image Emerges
The manipulated image depicting Indian cricketer Shubman Gill and Sara Tendulkar, daughter of Indian cricket Sachin Tendulkar shows Sara hugging the batsman, both wearing smiles for the camera. Initially, fans speculated about a possible relationship between the two, but it didn’t take long for online users to realize that it was Sara Tendulkar deepfake image.
The original photograph, featuring Sara alongside her brother, Arjun Tendulkar, not only dispelled the rumors but reignited concerns about the increasing sophistication of deepfake technology.
While neither Shubman Gill nor Sara Tendulkar have commented on the viral Sara Tendulkar deepfake image, the exploitation of the deepfake technology has not gone unnoticed by the Indian government. The Union IT Ministry swiftly launched a probe into the matter, signaling a proactive approach to address the challenges posed by the proliferation of deepfake content.
Government Action and Probe Initiated
Union Minister of State for Skill Development & Entrepreneurship and Electronics & IT, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, underscored the government’s commitment to the safety and trust of digital citizens. In response to the deepfake menace, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MEITY) issued a second advisory within the last six months, urging online platforms to take decisive actions against the spread of deepfakes.
Chandrasekhar emphasized the gravity of the situation, especially regarding the harm caused to citizens, particularly women, by misinformation and deepfakes.
He stressed, “Safety and trust of our Digital Nagriks is our unwavering commitment and top priority for the Narendra Modi Government. Given the significant challenges posed by misinformation and deepfakes, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MEITY) has issued a second advisory within the last six months, calling upon online platforms to take decisive actions against the spread of deepfakes,” said the minister.
Minister Chandrasekhar reminded online platforms of their legal obligation under the Information Technology (IT) rules, 2021. Platforms are required to remove misinformation within 36 hours of receiving a report, failure of which could lead to legal consequences.
The minister urged individuals impacted by deepfakes to file First Information Reports (FIRs) at their nearest police stations and utilize remedies provided under the Information Technology (IT) rules, 2021. The call to action is clear: a collective effort is needed to combat the growing threat to privacy and trust in the digital space.
As the government takes proactive measures to tackle the deepfake epidemic, it sends a resolute message—a commitment to safeguarding the integrity of digital spaces and shielding individuals from the potential repercussions of deceptive practices.
