In the letter from the provost of Indiana University, Bloomington (IUB) obtained by Indiana Public Media, Wang, a professor of computer science, engineering and informatics, was told that the university “has decided to terminate your employment effective immediately”.

“It is my understanding that you have informed the chair of your department that you have accepted a faculty appointment with a university in Singapore and will start your role there this summer,” the letter said. “Please note that you will not be eligible for rehire with Indiana University.”

The letter was dated Friday, the same day the Federal Bureau of Investigation searched Wang’s two homes in Indiana. The FBI said the searches in the cities of Bloomington and Carmel were carried out under a court warrant, but authorities did not disclose the grounds for the operation.

The Indiana Daily Student, a student-led publication covering the Indiana University community, reported that a university spokesperson did not confirm the document’s veracity, adding that the institution would not make any public comment about the investigation or status of the faculty member.
