Cross-Platform Passkey Integration
Meta revealed a major security upgrade for WhatsApp on August 25, 2026, which increases passkey support and enables users to create numerous passkeys for a single account. Previously, WhatsApp supported a single passkey per account. People who use both iOS and Android devices may now generate and save unique, biometric-backed passkeys for each platform thanks to the new multi-platform features. By combining Android screen locks with pre-existing on-device authentication, like Apple’s Face ID or Touch ID, users can log in across their personal devices in a seamless and phishing-resistant manner.
Milestone Reached and Companion Security Upgrades
Alongside the cross-platform passkey expansion, WhatsApp announced that passkey usage on the platform has officially crossed 1 billion users. To complement this passwordless milestone, the company introduced additional security measures to combat account takeovers and social engineering. Two-step verification is receiving an upgrade, allowing users to swap their traditional six-digit numeric PIN for a full, complex alphanumeric password complete with special characters. Additionally, Android users will begin seeing richer context on incoming calls from unknown numbers, including if the number is from a different country or if they share Whatsapp groups, helping users spot scams before answering. Users can manage these security features directly in the app under Settings > Account > Passkeys.
