Microsoft has rolled out Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26300.8170 to the Dev Channel, bringing crucial updates for system security and storage management.
Announced by the Windows Insider Program Team on April 10, 2026, this release delivers enhanced oversight for Secure Boot states.
It streamlines User Account Control (UAC) prompts. The update provides users with greater visibility into their device’s underlying hardware security infrastructure.
Secure Boot Certificate Oversight
The most significant cybersecurity enhancement in this build involves the Windows Security application.
Microsoft is actively updating Secure Boot certificates across consumer devices and specific business PCs to maintain robust defenses against boot-level malware.
To help users monitor this critical transition, the new build introduces a clear visual status system within the Device Security menu.
According to the Windows Insider Program Team, users will now see distinct green, yellow, and red icon badges reflecting their device’s current Secure Boot state.
This update empowers users to easily verify their certificate status at a glance without relying on complex command-line queries.
Notably, Microsoft has disabled this visual experience by default on enterprise IT-managed devices and servers, allowing administrators to maintain centralized control over security monitoring and alerts.
Beyond boot security, Build 26300.8170 refines how Windows handles administrative privileges and storage formatting.
Microsoft has adjusted UAC triggers in system settings to reduce prompt fatigue. This common behavioral security risk can lead users to approve malicious elevation requests unquestioningly.
Key storage and system modifications include:
- Moving the UAC prompt in Storage settings so it only triggers when explicitly viewing temporary files, rather than immediately upon opening the page.
- Increasing the formatting size limit for FAT32 volumes via the command line from 32GB to a massive 2TB.
- Boosting navigation performance when rendering storage data on exceptionally large volumes.
The development team also patched a telemetry bug in the Network & Internet settings that previously displayed unrealistically high data usage metrics.
Additionally, the Feedback Hub received several interface upgrades, including session memory for window sizes and streamlined mouse navigation.
These features are currently rolling out to Windows Insiders running version 25H2 via an enablement package.
Because Microsoft uses Controlled Feature Rollout, these security enhancements will reach a small subset of users first before a broader release.
