Zscaler, Inc., a global leader in cloud security, has announced the successful acquisition of SquareX.
This strategic move is designed to extend Zscaler’s Zero Trust capabilities directly into the web browser, effectively securing the “AI era” of enterprise work.
The acquisition, which closed on February 5, 2026, focuses on redefining how organizations secure unmanaged devices.
By integrating SquareX’s technology, Zscaler allows companies to embed lightweight security extensions into standard browsers like Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge.
This approach eliminates the need for expensive Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) or risky legacy VPNs when dealing with third-party or Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) scenarios.
Solving the Unmanaged Device Problem
Historically, securing external users, such as contractors or employees using personal devices, has been a significant challenge for IT departments.
Traditional methods rely on Remote Access VPNs, which are often vulnerable to exploitation, or VDI solutions, which can be cost-prohibitive and hinder user productivity.
Zscaler previously disrupted this market with Zscaler Private Access (ZPA), which shifted the industry toward a Zero Trust architecture.
With the addition of SquareX, Zscaler is advancing this framework to address the modern, distributed enterprise.
The integration provides uncompromising security and device posture checks without requiring a full agent installation on the operating system or forcing users to adopt a proprietary “enterprise browser.”
Jay Chaudhry, CEO and Founder of Zscaler, emphasized the flaws in older access technologies.
“Enterprises have historically relied on legacy VPNs and VDIs, but these technologies are fundamentally flawed and laden with security risks,” Chaudhry stated.
“With SquareX, Zscaler is deepening our Zero Trust Exchange Platform’s capabilities in standard browsers… to stop threats without having to deploy a third-party enterprise browser.”Vivek Ramachandran, founder of SquareX, highlighted the operational benefits.
“By integrating with Zscaler, we will enable organizations to secure SaaS and private applications across any device managed or BYOD without compromising productivity,” said Ramachandran.
He noted that this integration allows IT leaders to replace insecure legacy tools with precise policies that protect data and AI interactions based on specific risk profiles.
This acquisition reinforces Zscaler’s position as a dominant platform for global enterprise security.
By securing the browser where most modern work occurs Zscaler ensures that data remains protected regardless of the device or location.
